St. Andrew’s Church
The view of the Baroque architecture of St. Andrew’s Church as you walk up the winding Andriyivs’kyy descent is simply remarkable.
Initially built in 1763, finished in 1767, and restored later by famous architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, it is one of Ukraine’s four landmarks included in the 2002 catalog “100 Wonders Of The World”.
The church is a magnificent representation of traditional Ukrainian five-domed churches with its cross shape at the surrounding platform around the base for terrific views of Podil and Dnieper River.
Proposals Submitted for UNESCO World Heritage List
The lengthy process of including St Andrew’s Church in the UNESCO World Heritage List is detailed in section 36 COM 8B.41, Decisions adopted by the Committee in 2012, as part of UNESCO inclusion for Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (Ukraine).
In 2012, the consideration for inclusion depended upon the church staying in the Saint Sophia National Protection Area, improving tourist facilities for parking and removing vendor souvenir booths from immediate area surrounding the church property, regulation of automobile traffic, subsoil stability and structural integrity concerns, restructuring of Andreevsky Spusk street, and creating a buffer zone northeast of the church.
In 2016, St. Andrew’s Church was mentioned again in the State of Conservation page on UNESCO’s website for Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (Ukraine). The mention occurs in section Conservation issues presented to the World Heritage Committee in 2016, subsection 39 COM 7B.85.
In 2021, the two current UNESCO World Heritage site in Kyiv as well as the two proposed inclusions, St. Andrews Church and St. Cyril’s Church, are part of the Decisions adopted by the Committee in 2021, 44 COM 7B.59. The primary concerns are finalizing the Historical and Architectural Key Plan of Kyiv, Zoning Plans of the Kyiv City Master Plan, and comprehensive inventory of existing and planned tall buildings that may obstruct views from and towards the four historical landmarks. An updated report is scheduled to be submitted by December 1, 2022.
