The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is a place of spiritual contemplation and historical significance. The National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Reserve complex includes caves with buried monks and a renowned cathedral at one of the two Kyiv UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Upper Lavra
The Upper Lavra consists of the primary sightseeing attractions such as the bell tower and churches.

The far caves were the first caves in the Lavra catacombs, where saintly Theodosius was laid to rest. His relics were later transferred to Dormition Cathedral following his death.

A lavra, from the Greek word laura, originally meant a narrow lane or alley in the city. Today, it is now used to describe monasteries that are centered around churches with an attached refectory. These buildings usually house multiple hermit monks who adhere closely to Orthodox Christian traditions of prayerful living and solitude for the spiritual benefit.
The lavra is often contrasted against other types, such as a convent, which houses nuns at its center. These two structures exhibit differing layouts depending on whether their function was primarily religious (lava) versus social (convent).
Why is the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra important?
The monastery is known as the Kyiv Monastery of Caves, and its name translates to “in caves.” The story of Lavra tells how Anthony returned to his native land and settled down with other monks in Kyiv.
He chose the Berestov Mount as it overlooked the beautiful Dnieper River, which he would soon baptize many people into Christianity.
